Our Work
The Trust has a comprehensive coastal conservation programme. Measures include the following:
- Habitat restoration: The Trust’s work involves the conservation of yellow-eyed penguin breeding habitats.
- Predator control: Introduced predatory mammals pose a serious threat to all New Zealand birds.
- Research projects: A variety of research projects have been undertaken to learn more about the penguins.
- Threats: In New Zealand, one thousand years ago humans brought with them many threats to add to the penguins’ plight.
- Nursery: The Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust established a plant nursery in 1989 with the purpose of growing plants for revegetating yellow-eyed penguin habitats.
- Education: The Trust provides information to the public on penguin conservation, and advocates for its ongoing protection.
