Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa will be made up of five regional teams, who will compete in an eight-week competition with each team playing six home and six away games. The competition will tip off from 29 June, with a Finals series scheduled for 26 August at Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre venue.
Each team has a Te Reo Māori element to their name, with their name and logo matching the league’s “to soar” theme. The league and respective team names have been supported through the creation process by BBNZ kāumatua, Dr Taku Parai (Ngāti Toa).
The five teams in this competition are:
- North: Northern(team named awaiting confirmation)
- Mid North: Whai
- Central: Tokomanawa Queens
- Upper South: Mainland Pouākai
- Lower South: Southern Hoiho
General Manager for the New Zealand Men’s and Women’s National Basketball Leagues Huw Beynon says that all five teams will play and represent an entire region, not just a single city.
“Teams will aim to have games played at multiple venues across each region, which makes the league even more accessible and allows teams to engage at a community level as well as a basketball level.”
“This helps to give young women in the region something to aspire to; having professional basketball available to them in their backyard and a platform for players to achieve their hoop dreams.”

COVID-19 Regulations
The University does not make masks mandatory indoors as they believe it is impractical to enforce this and it goes beyond the Government requirements for Orange Level.

Whether you wear a mask or not is a personal choice; please be respectful of each other.

2019 NZ Bird Conference – Wellington
Saturday 1st – Monday 3rd June 2019 – Brentwood Hotel, Kilbirnie, Wellington
This 80th celebratory conference aims to continue the fine work of previous events in making this the premier New Zealand conference for the communication of new research findings on New Zealand birds and for providing opportunities for discussion and networking for professional ornithologists, students and others who are interested in birds and their habitats.
We look forward to hearing from several keynote lectures of a diversity of topics, including Wellington birds, Auckland Islands, old bones and ancient DNA, genetics and taxonomy, physiology and reproduction, and seabirds. We hope that a range of shorter talks will describe studies on a wide range of topics and in doing so we look forward to bringing together researchers and all who are interested to share their knowledge and findings to make this conference a dynamic, informative and memorable event.
The conference will comprise two days of scientific presentations and five field trip options. The Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday afternoon, 1st June.
There are limited spaces – register now!
Oamaru Penguin Symposium
The 2018 Oamaru Penguin Symposium will be held in Oamaru, New Zealand, on Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th of May 2018.
The Oamaru Penguin Symposium is a biennial meeting attended by researchers, volunteers, field workers, students and rehabilitators from all types of organisations. The symposium began in the late 1990’s as the “Blue Penguin Scientific Symposium” to provide information to the community about the effects of tourism on the blue penguins at the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony. The symposium grew to include other New Zealand penguin species, with recent years seeing the inclusion of penguin species from outside New Zealand. To continue the growth of the meeting and to provide an opportunity for discussions about other seabird species, the penguin symposium is open to include presentations on all aspects of seabird biology and conservation. The aim is to encourage participation from a wide variety of seabird researchers and enthusiasts. This year we will also look to hold workshops during the meeting, please let us know if you have suggestions for these.
Venue: The venue is the Oamaru Opera House with the day meetings held in the O.D.T Inkbox Theatrette.
Registration: The cost is $145 per person to attend, which includes morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea both days. Attendance for one day only will be $80. A field trip visiting both the nearby yellow-eyed penguin colony and the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony is included.
Dinner will be held in Oamaru’s historic precinct at Housekeepers Function centre in the Loan & Merc building. The cost for the two-course dinner is $45 per person.
Register either by emailing the convenor, Philippa Agnew, or online at the website.
Annual yellow-eyed penguin Symposium
Saturday 4th August 2018
10th International Penguin Conference, Dunedin, New Zealand
Saturday 24th – Wednesday 28th August 2019
The International Penguin Conferences (IPC) are the primary gathering of the world’s leading scientists, research managers and policy makers working on penguin biology, ecology, health and behaviour to discuss ongoing research, identify current and emerging conservation issues and create action plans. It’s a unique opportunity to bring together disparate groups of people with a common interest in penguins; the connections they make have often proved most fruitful and have led to some exciting collaborations.
The 10th International Penguin Conference will be held in the St David Theatre Complex of the University of Otago and will begin with an icebreaker the evening before. The proposed key themes for this conference are (but are not limited to): Fisheries interactions; Climate Change; The role of indigenous people (perspectives from different cultures) and Diseases.
There are optional field trips offered and a conference dinner will be held on the last night.
