Strategy for Hoiho Recovery
In 2018, a partnership between Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust/Te Tautiaki Hoiho, the Department Of Conservation/Te Papa Atawhai and Fisheries New Zealand/Tini a Tangaroa was formed. Each of these organizations plays a vital role in safeguarding the hoiho species across its entire range.
The Hoiho Governance and Technical Group were entrusted with the task of formulating a fresh strategy aimed at fostering the well-being of hoiho in both land and sea environments. The strategy, Te Kaweka Takohaka mō te Hoiho, and a five-year action plan, Te Mahere Rima Tau, were officially endorsed and published in 2020.
A Living Document
Te Mahere Rima Tau aligns with the objectives of Te Kaweka Takohaka mō te Hoiho and will undergo ongoing refinement. An annual evaluation will be conducted after each season to ensure its effectiveness.
