The New Zealand Wildlife Health Centre, located at Massey University in Palmerston North, receives sick and injured yellow-eyed penguins from all over the South Island. They are treated, rehabilitated and eventually readied for release by a dedicated team of top notch vets and support staff. The goal of the NZWHC is to promote the welfare and conservation of New Zealand’s wildlife through first rate care and dedication to each animal. The Centre is also involved in research concerning Yellow-eyed penguins, investigating their declining numbers on the sub-Antarctic islands. Post mortems carried out by the NZWHC have enabled the Trust to identify causes of death in yellow-eyed penguin chicks on Stewart Island and thus added to our knowledge of why breeding success is declining on the Anglem Coast. Working together with other organisations dedicated to the survival of an endangered species, the NZWHC endeavors to provide information on their ongoing management and survival.

This year, Massey’s 3rd year vet students have chosen the NZWHC as their charity in the annual Halfway Day fundraiser. Each year, 3rd-year vet students hold a series of fundraisers for a class trip aimed at celebrating reaching the half-way mark in the rigorous vet programme. The biggest contributor to the fund is the Barely There calendar (vetcalendar.co.nz) in which students (tastefully) bare more than just their hearts in hopes of raising some money to contribute to the trip. The class then donates at least 10% of their proceeds to a chosen charity. This year they are proud and excited to support the NZWHC and the important work being done by a fantastic group of compassionate and dedicated professionals.
