Holcim plants penguin habitat

Tavora Reserve has benefited from the ‘Together for Communities’ initiative of Holcim New Zealand. On Friday 29 June, about twelve staff from Taylors Lime at Dunback planted 300 native trees and shrubs, provided by the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust (YEPT). Holcim contributed the materials needed for plant protection.

A leading supplier of cement, aggregates, ready mixed concrete and lime, Holcim this year is celebrating 100 years of strength, performance and passion. Employees were asked to celebrate the centennial by carrying out volunteer work in their communities. Craig Porter, operations manager of Taylors Lime (which has been supplying the South Island with high grade limestone for more than 100 years) contacted the YEPT to offer their services.

John Reeves, Holcim’s General Manager, Lime in Otorohanga, also pitched in, helping to plant the area which had been cleared of scrub by YEPT staff a few days earlier.

The YEPT is hoping that this relationship might become an annual one, in which Holcim’s passion for community work translates into a passion for yellow-eyed penguins.
