Floods affect penguin planting
The Trust's Nursery suffered badly in last weeks floods that hit many parts of Dunedin City, with plant losses expected to be as high as 80%. Many of the plants lost were ready to go into penguin habitats this winter. However there are also many trays of smaller seedlings either buried under or covered in silt so until the cleanup begins, it is unknown how many of these can be salvaged.
This is the first time the Nursery has been flooded to this extent. The neighbouring creek filled with debris and eventually the bank burst with a 'river' flowing through the site, taking many plants and pots as much as 500m down the road and into the sea at Company Bay.
The Trust's insurance assessors have now viewed the damage, and we wait for the landlord's to do the same, before a plan of cleanup and salvaging of plants can be activated.
