Hoiho breed in New Zealand's South Island and Stewart Island, and
as far south as the sub-antarctic islands of Campbell, Auckland
and Codfish.
The map below shows the distribution of the Yellow-eyed Penguin

Viewing Sites
The
best place to watch penguins is from a viewing hut.
They are best viewed at dawn or dusk. Around dawn they leave their
nests to enter the sea for a day's fishing, returning during the
last two hours of daylight.
There are four public viewing huts on the Otago coast which you
can use free of charge. Binoculars are handy.
Bushy Beach, near Oamaru - 5 minutes walk from the carpark to the
viewing hut. Katiki Point at Moeraki - 5 minutes walk from the carpark
to the viewing hut.
Sandfly Bay, Otago Peninsula - 30 minutes walk form the end of
Seal Road. Walk north along the beach, then follow the track up
the sand hill to the viewing hut.
Alternatively you can view the penguins with a commercial operator.
Contact the local Visitor Centres for further information.
