    Little effort

    Fivedollarnote
The hoiho noise shouting competition The hoiho (its Maori name) the noise shouter, has been named for a very good reason. It makes a very loud sound telling its chicks that it is returning to the nest with food. Why not have a sponsored noise shouter competition within the class or school at assembly? Score by the loudest and the most accurate call.
Penguin coin trail How many penguins can you ‘draw’ on the basketball court using coins? Get started with this picture.
Quiz/trivia lunchtime Charge an entry fee for individuals or teams to take part; questions could be on all things penguin. The winning teams get a prize.
Alternative transport Get sponsored to find different ways to get to and from school each day for a week. You could be sponsored for the number of days you succeed or for the number of different methods you find e.g. walking backwards, cycling, skateboarding, roller skating etc.
Market stall outside the school Sell your school gardens produce. Don’t forget the sign telling everyone that all proceeds go to the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust.

    Some effort

Sponsored silence Set a specified time (preferably in the morning) for class members to work without talking.
Sponsored events It can be a marathon, 5 km race, 10 km race, a decathlon and a triathlon, even a danceathon where participants are sponsored for every hour they stay on the dance floor. Or, try a sponsored skip.  For inspiration check out this skipping!

Heaps of effort – but well worth it!

The Penguin Hop Organise a disco for 11 to 15 year olds. Sell tickets in advance, and have a raffle during the evening, appoint judges, and give a prize to the winners. Have refreshments.
Organise an after-school class party Tell everyone who will come to the party that the event is for a good cause. Make people pay when they arrive at the party. Ask around the school for performers.
Calendars With a scanner and colour printer and a suitable software package, design and print calendars for sale at school. Great for grandparent’s Xmas presents. Keep the numbers printed small so you won’t be left with a stock of unsold out-of-date calendars. The pictures could be scanned photos of anything yellow-eyed penguin. You could use winning entries from an art competition for the calendar. Your local printshop might offer a reduced price run for reproducing calendars. This fundraiser requires a budget.
