Communication
Maori named the yellow-eyed penguin the Hoiho meaning the “noise shouter”.
Because penguins nest under dense vegetation out of visual range from one another their very loud call is necessary for locating mates and chicks.Penguins communicate using calls and visual displays. These are used for such purposes as:
- Declaring territory
- Showing aggression or submission
- Attracting and greeting mates
